The area was notably settled by both English and Dutch settlers, and it was put on the map with the construction of Fort Saratoga. The springs began attracting both permanent residents and tourists as early as 1776, and the first hotel was built by Gideon Putnam. Subsequently roads began to be built, and the town started to boom. The well-known Revolutionary War, Battle of Saratoga was not fought in the town, but was fought 15 miles from the area. Today, history enthusiasts can visit the Revolutionary War museum in nearby Stillwater. Visitors and locals can also visit a number of other museums that focus on the history of the region.
