Stafford, Texas is a small city in the metropolitan area of Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land. Most of the city resides in Fort Bend County; however, a small area of the city is part of Harris County. The town of Stafford began as a plantation in the 1800s. Soon, settlers began to inhabit the area around the plantation. This location was called Stafford's Point, and it was a popular town site. Today, Stafford is home to a diverse group of residents, including whites, blacks, Native Americans, and Asians. Interestingly, the city does not have municipal property tax. The city motto is "City with no property taxes." Although the city is considered a bedroom community, several people commute to the area for work. Stafford's top companies include UPS and Tyco. UPS has a large plant in Stafford and is actively hiring for jobs. There are also smaller businesses scattered throughout the city. Stafford actually has 15 different business parks, a large shopping center, and 19 motels and hotels.
Like other areas of Texas, Stafford is characterized by hot and humid summers. The wintertime is milder. Interestingly, there are no significant water sources in the area. There is a park with a lake and a jogging trail. However, the rest of the land is dedicated to transportation, buildings, homes, and parks. Over 35 acres of green space is found in the municipal parks in the area. Many parks offer softball and baseball fields, pavilions, basketball courts, playgrounds, soccer and football fields, and picnic benches. Another beautiful area of Stafford is found at he Margaret Havens Historical Memorial Garden. This garden has beautiful fountains, a stunning rose garden, and benches. It is a popular venue for weddings and town events. The Civic Center is also a top destination for city residents. Many residents pay $10 yearly to use the facilities in this center, particularly the large pool. In addition to the parks and recreation in Stafford, the area is home to multiple schools. Houston Community College is located in the city, and it serves approximately 8,000 students each year. There are also a variety of public and private schools.
