The area was largely uninhabited during the time the Spanish claimed Florida as a part of New Spain. Once the U.S. purchased the territory from Spain in 1821, the Tampa Bay area began to attract settlers, following the location of Fort Brooke at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. After the Civil War, the town suffered a slump and very nearly ceased to exist. But local mineral finds and the establishment of a fertilizer manufacturing industry led to a boom in the area's economy in the late nineteenth century. Since then, the town has continued to grow steadily with fertilizer being replaced by cigar manufacturing as the backbone of the regional economy. Today, Tampa has a diversified economy, with healthcare, insurance, shipping, and tourism providing most of the area's residents with employment. The city is composed of a wide variety of neighborhoods made up of towns and municipalities that were swallowed up as the city increased in size. The main geographical areas that make up the town include Downtown, New Tampa, and West, East, North, and South Tampa. The largest residential neighborhoods within these areas are Ybor City, Forest Hills, Ballast Point, Sulphur Springs, Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights, Palma Ceia, Hyde Park, Davis Islands, Tampa Palms, and College Hill.
