Nestled on the Gulf Coast's Galveston Bay, Texas City's location is what has defined it. Development of the area began in 1893 by three duck hunters from Duluth, Minnesota who saw its potential as a major port. Shipping and industry became Texas City's bread and butter, with a major emphasis on petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing. It seems as if the duck hunters were correct in their vision, because today the Port of Texas City, TX is the ninth leading port in the States and is part of the Panama Canal Expansion Project scheduled for completion by 2016. Residents also find work in healthcare and tourism, two employment sectors the city planners have focused on to boost the economy.
