Washington D. C. is best known for its history as the capital, together with its massive collection of monuments, museums and state buildings. It lies along the banks of the Potomac River on a site selected by George Washington and donated by the states of Virginia and Maryland in 1790. Due to retrocession in the years leading up to the United States Civil War, the District of Columbia is now much smaller than it was originally. The home to just about every federal agency in the country, its population and economy seem to revolve almost exclusively around government. But the city is home to a great many people, places, and things that are either only tangentially associated with it being the capital, or not associated with it at all. Though government jobs and tourism directly associated with the city's status as the nation's capital do make up the two largest pieces of the metropolitan area's economic pie, the city is also known for a variety of other growing industries, including pubic policy, education, scientific research and finance. The District is home to George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, and a variety of other smaller colleges and institutions of learning.
