Washington was founded in 1815 as Washington Township. The community remained small until the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad was built in 1857. After that, Washington turned into a major depot and repair yard stop for the railroad. As more railroad employees moved to the area for work, the city would start growing and eventually would become a prominent business center in the sector. Many of the city's Civil War-era buildings still stand, including the Helphenstine House, thus giving the city an old-time feel. Today, Washington, Indiana's economy is driven by its manufacturing, construction, and transportation industries.
