The Hartford region was originally established in 1636 by reverend Thomas Hooker, and in 1672 the area was expanded to the west. By the arrival of the American Revolution, the area had become a central location for agriculture. Later the town became home to a number of profitable companies focusing on pottery, brickwork, feed, and ice. However, West Hartford experienced its biggest boom when three turnpikes were built running through the city in the 18th and 19th century. This produced an increase in commerce. Commerce in the region only continued to grow with the development of the trolley and then later the automobile. While the city has transformed in recent years with new modern developments, it still stays true to its roots and history, and many locals and visitors continue to visit historical sites.
