The area of West Palm Beach was originally settled during the 1870s and 1880s, and it was officially established in 1894. The city experienced substantial growth in the 1920s, and between 1920 and 1927 the population quadrupled. The population once again boomed during the 1950s with the arrival of air conditioning. In recent decades, the city has gone through major redevelopment and revitalization along with substantial preservation, and there are a number of historical quarters. Clematis Street provides an exciting nightlife scene with a historical 1920s backdrop, and many old neighborhoods have been transformed into luxurious modern communities. There are many historic sites throughout the city that locals and tourists can admire. These sites include Bel Air Historic District, Central Park, El Cid, Flamingo Park, Grandview Heights, Mango Promenade, Northboro Park, Northwest, and Old Northwest Historic District, Northwood hills historic district, Prospect Park and West Northwood Historic District.
