It is no surprise that government is the cornerstone of the Woodbridge economy, considering its location so close to the nation's capital. Other staples of the Woodbridge economic landscape include banking and finance, education, health and medical sciences, research, retail and commerce, professional and business services, and food services. A number of educational institutions are some of the largest employers in Woodbridge. These include the Northern Virginia Community College, Stratford University, and the University of Valley Forge. Other employers include the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center and Rippon Lodge, the oldest house in the county. A great many Woodbridge residents commute into the Washington, D.C. area or other nearby cities for employment, such as Dale City, Lorton, Dumfries, and Alexandria.
