History buffs will be enthralled by what York has to offer. More than a dozen buildings are listed on The National Register of Historic Places including the Laurel-Rex Fire Company House. Constructed in 1878, this 2-story brick building was added to the list in 1976. Another historically significant building is Cookes House, which was built in 1761. It is believed that this house was the temporary home of Thomas Paine when he attended the Second Continental Congress, which convened in York from Sept. 30, 1777 to June 27, 1778. Besides historical sites, the York Little Theatre and the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center hosts many national acclaimed acts such as Kenny G. The York Fair is a staple in the community; its roots can be traced back to 1765. The fair offers rides, games and musical entertainment. Fair performers have included Alabama and Carrie Underwood.
