You are definately going about home ownership the right way. Get qualified first so you will know how much you are comfortable spending on a house. There are several companies in this area who could prequalify you over the phone in just a few minutes. I would recommend Josh Barnes at Peoples Bank in Grant, Adam Hammond at Spicer and Hammond in Guntersville and the mortgage department at Bancorp South in Guntersville.
