What are the ramifications for renting with ageing parents?

We are looking to relocate to the DC metro area and may need in the future to take ageing parents into our home (between the time we rent a place and then find something we like at our destination to purchase). Do we give a verbal heads up to the owner when we rent and then in writing later when they move in with us? Will they need to go through the application process if we are taking them in? Is the process standardized by state/county or does it vary with each owner?

The rental applications in the NoVA area has a place to list all occupants who will be living in the home. You should disclose on the application to avoid potential lease violations. Each broker/agent may be different in terms of making your parents qualify. My feeling is that if your credit and finances are strong they shouldn't make your parents qualify along with you.

This is a tough question, but valid. Since you really do not know when or if they are going to be in the rental, my first instinct would be: not to mention it on the application. But if the time should near for you to have to take the parents into the rental, yes, you have to get permission from the landlord. They may or may not have to go through the application process. This totally depends on the landlord. Good luck! Sylvia
