The peninsulas that make the Wolverine State look like the shape of a mitten divide its extensive landscape. The "thumb" part of the mitten is a peninsula that appears to be hitchhiking into Lake Huron and the Saginaw Bay. The "fingers" part of the mitten is made up of the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is in what is called the Copper Country region of the state. The Leelanau Peninsula is located in the Northern Lower Michigan region. Michigan has the second longest shoreline of any state, measuring 3,288 miles. Several islands dot the coasts of the state as well, many of them named after indigenous Native Americans, such as Kalamazoo, and later, French settlers that arrived in the 17th century.
