Little Rock was officially incorporated in November of 1831 and is the county seat of Pulaski County. The city is named after a rock formation called La Petite Roche along the river. For both the state and the South region, Little Rock is a central hub for economics, culture, government and transportation. Some of the more well-known institutions there include the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, the Arkansas Arts Center and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. The city's history is made available through a number of historic districts, museums and the Quapaw Quarter historic neighborhood. The name of this neighborhood honors the Quapaw Indians who originally lived in that area. There are at least fifteen individual National Historic Register Districts that constitute the Quarter, including over 200 separate homes. Some of the other neighborhoods in Little Rock include Candlewood, Capitol Hill, Brodie Cree, South End, Pleasant Valley, and Wakefield.

Little Rock is the headquarters location to several major corporations, such as Acxiom, Stephens Inc., Windstream Communications, Dillard's, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sources. The state government is also a significant employer. Little Rock is an important shipping hub due to Interstate 30 and Interstate 40, the major highways that meet in Little Rock. The Port of Little Rock is also a major shipping hub. Little Rock is the headquarters to a significant number of some of the most recognizable non-profit organizations in the country and world. Some of these include Clinton Presidential Center, Lions World Services for the Blind, Winrock International, and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
