Originally called Farmwell, Ashburn, Virginia, is 30 miles northwest of Washington DC. Ashburn is home to many high-tech businesses, a fact which is attributable to its being located within the Dulles Technology Corridor an area referred to by Atlantic Magazine as "the Silicon Valley of the East." When it comes to new housing developments in Ashburn, you will be hard pressed to find anything smaller than three bedrooms. Some of these are houses, some of them are spacious apartments and high-rises, and none of them are cheap.

Ashburn can be divided into several different housing subdivisions or neighborhoods, each one offering something unique. Ashburn Farm is directly north of the Dulles Greenway and offers mostly single-family homes. It includes the Ashburn Regional Library and is very close to the Dulles Town Center, a primary shopping center for the area. Ashburn village began development in 1987 and now covers over 1,500 acres of land. It has four recreation centers, the biggest one being the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion. The nearby community of Brambleton is a more recent development and a master-planned community. Including an exciting town center and miles of public trails, Brambleton has won several awards, making it a very attractive place to consider moving. Those who enjoy a more traditional feel will be likely to find their place in Belmont Greene. Bordering Belmont Country Club and Trailside Park, the neighborhood is cut through by the W&OD trail.

Many different companies employ people living in Ashburn, Virginia. The biggest employer is Loudoun County Public Schools, and this is followed by Loudoun County Government. Verizon Business has a major office in Ashburn, which is probably why they are the third largest employer in the city. The US Department of Homeland Security also provides jobs for many of the people in Ashburn. Orbital Sciences Corporation is a manufacturing company, and they trail just behind Homeland Security in the amount of people they employ.
