Do-It-Yourself Ugly Holiday Sweater

by Christine DemosDecember 9, 2010

This is the time of year when crocheted reindeer and light-up Christmas lights make appearances on sweaters. But long gone are the days of tolerating these horrid pieces of apparel—nowadays it’s common practice to celebrate them through Ugly Sweater Parties. In honor of this new holiday tradition, here are a few ideas for do-it-yourselfers to make an ugly holiday sweater that will stand out in the crowd!

  • An old or inexpensive sweater
  • Scissors
  • Felt and/or chenille stems (like the ones from the Dollar Store)
  • Hot glue or fabric glue
  • Fabric paint
  • Glitter (and LOTS of it)
  • Fun extras: fuzzy balls, feathers, lights, etc. Be creative!

You can approach this sweater in a variety of ways. Do you have a concept that you’d like to incorporate? For example, your sweater could be winter wonderland themed, or you centered on your favorite holiday symbol, like a Christmas tree or a bell. If so, you can work ideas into those themes such as snowflakes or presents or ornaments. You can also work off a template if you’re feeling craft-challenged. Regardless, adorn it with the best holiday decorations you can think of. When it seems like enough it on there, go a little bit further! Come on people, it’s meant to be UGLY!

Stay tuned… my lovely creation will be posted tomorrow!!

And don’t forget to enter those ugly holiday sweaters in the Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest!
