How to Prepare for Buying Your First Home

by Cheria BrickhouseMarch 22, 2016

Purchasing a home is one of the most exciting investments made in a lifetime. Just imagine getting your first set of keys to a home that you’ll be able to call your own, equipped with all of the ins and outs that you’ve always imagined having. A dream come true, right? While all of that sounds like a walk in the park, the truth of the matter is that buying your first home can be a really frustrating and daunting process if you aren’t fully prepared. Here are some tips to help you get started.

  1. Prioritize!

There are a few things that first time home buyers should consider when starting the search for their new home- price, location, size and, if you have kids, the school district of the area you are looking in. Rank these aspects in order of importance according to your personal preference. This will put you in a better position to make your selection and weed out those that aren’t the best fit.

  2. Learn the Lingo!

Like most industries, the Real Estate industry has it own language that all the Real Estate agents and those who work closely with them use. Familiarize yourself with words and terms like “closing costs”, “escrow”, and “PMI”. Being comfortable with their lingo will help you understand the process better and enable you to effectively communicate up until you make your final decision.

  3. Get help.

When buying your first home, your Real Estate agent will become your best friend. Really! During the process he or she will go everywhere with you, you will confide in them, and they will hold your hand through this tough time. Welcome them with open arms for they are the experts! In addition to showing you homes that fit your criteria, the agent will handle your paperwork, give you local insights, and be a line of defense for things that could possibly swindle you in the course of the sales process.

  4. Use the resources available to you.
