Asheville, NC: What’s Not to Love?

If you’ve ever been to Asheville, then you already know: this place is easy to love. Strolling around downtown, you can take in breathtaking art deco architecture, catch a light meal at a quaint sidewalk café, and find just about anything that’s missing from your life at any number of locally owned boutique shops. All this, against the majestic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Here, breathtaking attractions abound. There’s the Biltmore Estate, the stunning 1895 château-esque mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt. There’s the Blue Ridge Parkway, a breathtaking, 469-mile-long scenic highway that runs from North Carolina all the way to Rockfish Gap, Virginia. For nature lovers, Asheville’s Botanical Gardens and the North Carolina Arboretum are big draws, and sports fans love McCormick Field, which is one of the oldest minor-league stadiums still in use.

Everyone’s Talking About Asheville

We’re not the only ones who’ve noticed Asheville’s considerable charms. It’s been called the “Happiest City in America,” and not without reason. According to the Huffington Post, a University of Vermont study analyzed millions of tweets on the social media platform Twitter. Researchers then tabulated the results to find out which city’s tweets were the happiest. And guess what? Asheville came out near the top of the heap. According to this study, it’s definitely the happiest city on the east coast.

That study is only one of many accolades heaped upon this city of 84,000 people. Self Magazine called it the happiest city for women. Livability.com named it one of the top 100 best places to live. Greener Ideal called Asheville one of the 5 Healthiest and Greenest Cities in America.

Forbes Magazine seems to have taken a particular liking to Asheville, having named it among the best U.S. cities for business and careers, the best cities for job growth, and the five best beer cities in the United States.

Asheville Brewing Company president Mike Rangel agrees with Forbes. His Gold Medal-winning brewery’s motto is “Happy Brewery, Happy Beer.” He notes that Asheville’s popularity has made it something of a tourist mecca, but despite the complexity of the downtown parking situation, he and his staff seem to be taking it all in stride, and smiling all the while.

“We tell our staff to be patient with the droves of tourists by remembering that they don’t get to live here all year long so they’re not gonna be smiling as much as we do,” Rangel said.

Asheville Has Something for Everyone

What makes a city happy? Well, that depends on one’s priorities. But Asheville seems to have something for everyone.

For some, creativity is one of the cornerstones of a happy life. Asheville is full of creative types, from musicians to filmmakers, writers to painters. For others, living near a thriving small-business community a key quality-of-life component. Ninety-six percent of Asheville’s businesses have fewer than 50 employees.

Of course, in order to really enjoy everything your hometown has to offer, you have to be able to pay your bills. How does Asheville stack up when it comes to job opportunities? Well, as of June 2016, Asheville was on a 69-month streak of positive job growth, a feat that few cities can match.

Access to nature? Delicious food? Great entertainment? Asheville has it all.
