Ask Anna: Best Tips For Keeping Your Living Room Clean

by Anna MoseleyApril 18, 2017

I can’t believe it’s April and spring is fully upon us! It’s time to continue our spring cleaning, and today I’m sharing all of my best tips for how to keep your living room clean and fresh. As a family, we spend a lot of time in our family room, but it’s often times a place that gets overlooked when you think about cleaning. So let’s gather some tools and get to work!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

1. Fans and Light Fixtures

I don’t know about you, but I rarely think about cleaning the fan and light fixtures in our living room. When I take the time to actually look up at them, though, I can see that they’re covered in dust and cobwebs and just begging to be cleaned! Luckily they are easy to clean if you have an extendable wool duster. Carefully reach the duster up to each of the light figures and wipe all around it. Next, move to the fan and carefully wipe down each blade, top, and bottom. Some dust might fall to the ground (it’s okay, we’ll vacuum in later) but most of it will get caught in the wool duster, which is why I love to use the wool over other products.

2. Windows and Mirrors

You don’t want a smudgy view so let’s use the EnviroCloth to clean those windows and mirrors! Get the EnviroCloth damp, wring it out and use it to wipe down all the glass. The EnviroCloth is a very high-end microfiber cloth that catches all kinds of grease and smudges so you don’t have to use any other product with it–simply wipe and let it dry! Because it’s such a high-quality microfiber cloth, you can also use it to wipe down your TV.

3. Flat Surfaces

After you finish wiping down all the windows, mirrors, and your TV, rinse the EnviroCloth and wring it out again. Now, head back to the living room and use it to wipe down all the flat surfaces – TV console, DVD player, cable box, coffee table, side tables, etc. Don’t forget to wipe down your decorations too!

4. Remote Controls

Remote controls are probably one of the most frequently touched items in the house but if you’re honest, how often do you really clean them? Because they’re full of bacteria from our hands, we have to make sure we kill it all, to prevent spreading any germs.

To easily clean them, use a hydrogen peroxide wipe and thoroughly wipe all the buttons, the front, and the back of all the remotes. Make sure you are using a hydrogen peroxide wipe because they’re the only ones that will actually kill all the bacteria – regular ineffective disinfectant wipes are ineffective.

5. Freshen Up the Furniture

Have you ever sat down on your couch and thought it smelled musty? We have a dog so I feel that way all the time. Luckily there’s an easy solution, though I bet you were wondering why I put a Parmesan cheese shaker on the list of things you’d need, right? Go ahead and fill the shaker with baking soda and 8-10 drops of your favorite, fresh smelling essential oil. Cover the shaker with saran wrap and shake it until the oil and baking soda are thoroughly mixed. Remove the saran wrap, place the lid on the shaker and then head to the living room.

Sprinkle the mixture on the couch, chairs, any rugs, the carpet, anything that needs a little freshening up. After you’ve covered everything in the baking soda mixture, let it sit for about 10 minutes. When 10 minutes is up, go back to the living room with the vacuum and vacuum the floors thoroughly, as well as all the furniture you sprinkled with the baking soda.

6. Finishing Touches

Now the everything smells fresh and clean, finish vacuuming the entire room. Make sure to get the baseboards and move the furniture around to get underneath all the chairs, couches, tables, etc. Don’t be lazy with the vacuuming because you’ll be surprised at how much dust, hair and other stuff hides out under the furniture!
