America’s Most Vegan Friendly Cities, and Why We Love Them

Vegan Gems Are Springing Up All Across the Country

Although it would be great if everyone could have a backyard garden and eat farm-to-table style for every meal, sometimes you just want to go out to eat at a restaurant. For city dwellers and travelers, maintaining a vegan diet can seem daunting as it’s often hard to find vegan options in cities where gardens and farms aren’t ubiquitous. But we’ve come to an age where eating vegan is actually pretty easy.

Restaurants and novelty vegan shops are springing up all over the country, and the vegan lifestyle is flourishing. To help you find the best vegan and veggie gems, we’ve put together a list of the top five best vegan cities in the U.S., with suggestions and details on how to explore these cities through a cruelty-free lens.
Vegan Friendly Cities

Portland

Portland has a growing reputation for being a hub of vegan and cruelty-free restaurants and businesses. From scrumptious vegan bakeries like Petunia’s and Sweet Pea Baking Company to vegan novelties like a vegan tattoo parlor and a vegan strip club, Portland will keep you busy with vegan activities and tasty treats for days. Ranked by PETA as 2016’s best American city for vegans, Portland’s vegan options make for a vegan foodie’s paradise.

Angela Liddon from one of our favorite blogs, Oh She Glows, praises the restaurant Portobello for its cauliflower “steak” with a tangy Chimichurri sauce.
Vegan Friendly Cities

Los Angeles

With LA’s standing as a mecca for health consciousness, it’s no surprise that it lands second on our list of best vegan cities in the US. Cowgirls and Collard Greens has a great blog post about finding the best vegan spots in LA, highlighting Gracias Madre as a place where even “skeptical non-vegans” can find satisfaction in cruelty-free eats. Expect killer margaritas and mushroom tacos that will blow your mind.

If you’re looking for a sweet treat to indulge in, be sure to check out Donut Friend, the all-vegan donut shop on York boulevard. They offer the unique option of a DIY donut, where you can choose a donut and fill it with anything from fresh fruit to mochi.
Vegan Friendly Cities

New York

New York seems to have something for everyone, and vegan food options are no exception. Hundreds of vegan restaurants are sprinkled across the island of Manhattan and beyond, including Blossom, an upscale restaurant that serves up a mean vegan lasagna.

If you’re in the city in April, be sure to check out the Veggie Pride Parade, featuring vegan and vegetarian speakers and other resources for living vegan in the city.
Vegan Friendly Cities

Detroit

Detroit is a kind of curve ball when it comes to vegan havens in the U.S. We mostly picture cars and major industry when we think of old Detroit, but it turns out there is a fairly large number of vegan restaurants and businesses in the city. So much so that Eater Detroit has a comprehensive list with a map of the best vegan eats around the city.

Some of our favorites include Detroit Vegan Soul and Cass Cafe. Expect to find cool art on the walls and scrumptious seasonal entrees at Cass. At Detroit Vegan Soul, we recommend the soul platter, which comes with hearty mac and cheese and maple glazed yams. Yum!

Nashville

It makes sense that Nashville would make this list; after all, it’s located in a region filled with farms and plenty of rich soil. Nashville has some great resources for people looking for a vegan community, including Nashvegan, a guide for living and eating in Nashville that includes recipes, meet up locations, and restaurant guides.

The Nashville Vegfest happens every April, and is fun and healthy way to explore the vegan scene in Vegan. Be sure to keep your eye out for The Turnip Truck — with two locations in Nashville, this natural grocery will satisfy all of your veggie needs.
