The Upper West Side of Manhattan spans several smaller neighborhoods on the West Side of Manhattan Island. New Yorkers often abbreviate the area’s name to UWS. The area is bordered by Central Park on one side, and the Hudson River on the other, and runs from West 59th Street and West 110th Street. Some people also include Morningside Heights in the Upper West Side, but this is more for real estate business purposes than it is a fact of life on the street. The Upper West Side is primarily an affluent, residential area, and is roundly considered to be where New York’s cultural and intellectual elite make their homes.
