Originally called Bethlehem, the Indiana city of Carmel, just north of Indianapolis, has been named the best place to live in the United States by CNN Money magazine. Carmel combines the charm of the long-ago dream of small town America with a modern urban thrust toward the future, and there are numerous new housing developments that seek to blend in with the city’s more traditional elements.

The neighborhoods in this city-on-the-move vary from townhome communities to ranch houses and standard sized family homes to spacious estates and even mansions in gated communities. The variety speaks to many different budgets and tastes, which is one of the reasons Carmel has grown so much. Other reasons for Carmel’s popularity may be its thriving arts scene and museums. Carmel has the most roundabouts of any U.S. city, and in 1924, it became home to one of the first automatic traffic signals in the country. The city can be divided into East Carmel and West Carmel, using Meridian Street as the dividing line, but subdivisions have gone up throughout the city, each with its own specific flavor. There are numerous family-friendly subdivisions and plenty of active HOAs.

In Carmel, an area called the Meridian Corridor has a large concentration of corporate offices. The city is home to more than 40 corporate headquarters and houses many more regional offices. Carmel is the national headquarters for Delta Faucet, ITT Technical Institute, Allegion, MISO and CNO Financial Group. Finance is a strong part of Carmel’s industry, and Allied Solutions, which distributes insurance, marketing and lending products, recently expanded and relocated its corporate headquarters to Carmel. Carmel also has a thriving health care industry and is home to numerous manufacturers of many types. With Indianapolis less than 28 miles away, the job possibilities grow even wider, and life in Carmel offers an attractive alternative to the rush and stress of living in a large city.
