Marlwood’s got curb appeal
Homebuyers will find everything from ranch styles and split-levels to Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods settled into the region's rolling valleys. Marlwood homes peek out from behind tall spindly oaks, underscoring the area's privacy and seclusion from bustling Uptown, Charlotte's central business district, 9 miles west. Prices range from $250,000 to $400,000. Homes here leave the market faster than in other close-in, higher-dollar areas. “It’s one of those places where things are still pretty affordable,” says Heather Reagor, a Realtor with Carolina Sky Real Estate Group, who’s been selling homes in the area for six years. “Anything under $350,000 moves really fast — within days. Marlwood residents can tackle weekly grocery shopping at Harris Teeter, just south of the neighborhood on Wyalong Drive. Next door is Angela's Pizza and Restaurant, a cozy, family-owned Italian place serving pizza and pasta paired with imported wine or beer. East W.T. Harris Boulevard, the neighborhood's main thoroughfare is also an active hive of globally inspired eateries. King of Spicy is a local favorite for Indian and Nepalese fare. Regulars rave about the biryani and momo dishes served from the casual strip mall spot. Albemarle Road Elementary and Albemarle Road Middle are just west of the neighborhood, with a natural pathway connecting the two campuses. The middle school recently achieved a National Award of Merit from Magnet Schools of America and secured a spot on National Forum's “Schools to Watch” list. Last on the public school track for Marlwood students is Independence High, which in 2007 set the national record for the longest winning streak by a public school football team with 109 consecutive wins. Part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, the schools earn C, C-plus and B-plus Niche grades.Outdoor fun at Albemarle Road Park
It's easy to unwind outdoors in this outer Charlotte area. Albemarle Road Park, on East W.T. Harris Boulevard, butts up against the western border. The tidy neighborhood respite's small spread of green space brushes up against winding wooded trails, a go-to for peaceful hikes and dog walking. Next door, there’s a recreation center that’s a popular community gathering place for exercise classes, indoor sports and fun at the playground.Highway 74 leads to Uptown
An easy 9-mile trip on Highway 74 leads Marlwood residents to bustling Uptown, for work or play. “The biggest draw to the area is that you’re close to the city center, but you get a suburban lifestyle,” Reagor says. “The proximity to Charlotte is great.” The Charlotte Area Transportation System serves the area with bus stops checkered along East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Idlewild Road, convenient for those who prefer a car-free commute. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is 15 miles west. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, an 874-bed facility, is 8 miles away via Monroe Road.
