The town of Dickinson, Texas, is just 28 miles southeast of Houston, and it is the fourth-largest metro area in the country. This growing town has everything you need to call it home. Its real estate appreciation rate grew an encouraging 10.9 percent last year, but the cost of living is 13 percent lower than the U.S. average. Home choices here range from quaint and cozy single-family homes to sprawling country estates. There is also plenty of land available for building a custom home.

Dickinson has six elementary schools, two middle schools for fifth and sixth graders, a junior high for seventh and eighth graders, and a high school for grades nine through 12. Private schools, as well as a charter school, contribute to the fact that there are only 15.9 students per teacher. The Dickinson Independent School District works to ensure that all of their facilities offer excellent learning environments equipped with state-of-the-art technology. To embrace the future, the city just built a multimillion-dollar City Hall and Library complex in 2009. History is celebrated here, too. The Dickinson Historic Railroad Center houses the Dickinson Railroad Depot, which was built in 1902. Another attraction, the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, sits just north of Dickinson in Clear Lake City.

The city of Dickinson offers a refreshing, proactive approach to economic development and a streamlined process for acquiring permits. The rapidly growing business landscape includes retail offerings as well as opportunities in the health care, petrochemical and aerospace industries. It’s not all business, though. Approximately 20,000 residents enjoy over 200 days of sunshine annually in this part of the country, and this growing community packs a lot of amenities in just 10.3 square miles. The temperate weather allows for an abundance of outdoor activities like golfing, biking, bird watching, camping, hiking and fishing. You can take your boat for a spin on Clear Lake or get out of town and head to the Galveston coast to surf the Gulf of Mexico. While you’re there, check out Moody Gardens, a nonprofit, educational attraction with zip lines and a golf course. The park also features Palm Beach, a water park with a white-sand beach, lagoons, slides, a lazy river and a splash pad for the kids. Plenty of entertainment, education and shopping is within easy reach of Dickinson. Residents can enjoy a more relaxed pace of living in a small-town setting. Job growth, amenities and attractions offered by the big city, and waterfronts within minutes from the center of town make this a great place to live.
