Flushing is a major village located in the borough of Queens is northern central New York City. It is both residential and commercial, and also contains one of the largest business districts in the area. One, two, and three bedroom condominiums are a popular form of housing in Flushing, where residences are compact and space must be maximized to the utmost efficiency. From mega high-rises to charming mid-rise condos with balconies, Flushing has much diversity to offer.
Divided both by its ethnic sub-sections and its named communities, Flushing is a village separated into dozens of smaller, distinctive neighborhoods, each with its own atmosphere and reputation. Chinatown is one of the largest of these sections, located along Flushing’s Main Street, and is one of the biggest enclaves of Chinese culture in the country, known as ‘The Chinese Manhattan’. Koreatown is another large ethnic community within Flushing, as is East Flushing, which houses many different nationalities from Indians to Greeks and is a high-concentration residential area. While Auburndale, another neighborhood in Flushing, is characterized by Tudor houses and colonial architecture, Broadway-Flushing is known for its low density and expansive housing, and Linden Hill is a diverse residential area in the heart of Flushing. Murray Hill, Queensboro Hill, and Waldheim, a suburban estate subdivision, are other notable communities in Flushing.
Flushing’s economy, as you might expect, is innately tethered to the economy of its surroundings, both in Queens and New York City itself. Small businesses and retail stores, restaurants, education, government, health, and professional and business services are the pillars of the Flushing workforce. Some of the largest employers in the village are the New York City Department of Education, the East-West School of International Studies, Queens College of the City University of New York, and the New York Hospital Queens. Additionally, many Flushing residents commute via public transportation to other boroughs of the city for employment.
