Located in the eastern part of Dekalb County, Stone Mountain was host to some of the 1996 Olympic Games. But its history goes back much farther, as the area was a source of contention during the Civil War. In fact, Stone Mountain village was raised by men under the command of General James B. McPherson in July 1864. The actual landmark, Stone Mountain, which is one of the city's primary attractions, also features a large carving commemorating Confederate leaders. More than 5 miles in circumference at its base, Stone Mountain is located in Stone Mountain Park, a state park which includes a museum and tourist railroad among other features. Visitors to the park also have options such as a Summit Skyride, hiking, fishing, grilling and camping.
