Located along the banks of the scenic Cache la Poudre River in the northern mountains of Colorado, Fort Collins is the fourth largest city in the state. The homes of Fort Collins not only boast wonderfully rich views of the surrounding landscape, but also a rugged, brick and stone architecture that is simultaneously elegant and outstanding. Some townhomes are available in the city, though larger single family homes or bungalows prevail.
Fort Collins is located centrally between its smaller neighboring cities, such as Masonville, Laporte, Wellington, Nunn, Windsor, and Loveland. Within the city, the neighborhoods are known for their family-friendly orientation, easy access to the outdoors and recreational spaces, and their overall safety. Some of the most desirable subdivisions within Fort Collins are Southbridge Greens Boulevard, Giddings, Mountainview, Horsetooth Road, Harmony Road, Frontage Road, and Boardwalk Drive. There are 46 constituent neighborhoods in Fort Collins, and dozens of different communities, some with community centers or recreational facilities of their own, and all with their own distinctive attributes. There are six governmental districts within Fort Collins, each of which has its own city council official.
Because of the presence of Colorado State University, Fort Collins is distinguished both as a college town and as a major commercial and retail center of the relatively unpopulated region. Manufacturing, biotechnology, clean energy sciences, agri-tech businesses, and professional services are the heart and soul of the Fort Collins economy. Some of the city’s top employers include Hewlett-Packard, the Poudre Valley Health System, Agilent, the City of Fort Collins, Eastman Kodak, Larimer County, Avago Technologies, and the Columbine Health Systems. Educational enterprises in the area also provide many jobs, primarily through the Poudre School District and Colorado State University. Intel, AMD, Beckman Coulter, and National Semiconductor are all major corporations who have primary offices in Fort Collins. Walmart is the retailer in the area that provides the largest amount of jobs to local residents.
