The seat of Hall County located in northeastern Georgia is Gainesville, also known both as the ‘Queen City of the Mountains’ and the ‘Poultry Capital of the World’, due to its number of meat processing facilities. The homes in Gainesville reflect its location in the hills and are spacious in size, modern in style, and ultimately customizable in architecture. Both Victorian and colonial influences can be detected in the many new homes and developments within Gainesville.
Though Gainesville, in its location at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is in a heavily wooded area, much development has taken place in recent years and numerous subdivisions and residential communities have emerged from within the trees. Some of the newest, most upscale neighborhoods and gated communities include Oscarville, Murrayville, Cleveland Highway, Lakeshore Estates, Sunset Heights, Dawsonville Highway, Park Hill Drive, Spring View Acres, and Blackshear Place. Many of these enjoy self-contained amenities such as clubhouses, recreational areas, and sports arenas within the subdivision. Certain areas of Gainesville lie along the banks of the very popular Lake Lanier, an inland lake that is a perennial destination for water sports enthusiasts, fishers, and those who simply enjoy the scenery.
The best known and continually most prevalent industry and economic vehicle within Gainesville is poultry farming, with chicken processing plants representing a whopping six of the city’s top ten employers. Still, the largest single employer in Gainesville is the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, which employs 5,200 individuals in the region. Together, the poultry processing plants Fieldale Farms, Coleman Natural, Koch Foods, Pilgrim’s, ZF, and Mar-Jac employ over 7,600 residents of the Gainesville area and bring in a statewide revenue that exceeds $3 billion dollars. Companies like Kubota, a manufacturer of off-road vehicles, and Wrigley, a candy and gum maker, are also top employers in the area. The Walmart Supercenter in Gainesville has a workforce of over 300 people.
