Greenwich, CT, is a nice mix of residents even though many figures related to the city skew things to make it seem like only the rich live here. In fact, in the downtown area, many working class people live in apartments above the shops and businesses located there. Additionally, the town is full of condos, apartment houses and modest single-family homes that are found among the larger, more luxurious houses. The median home price of $1.34 million is not as representative of the whole city when you consider all these other factors.
The diversity of the city can be seen through exploring its streets. The Central Greenwich area has meandering streets filled with small houses and businesses and is where the more affordable homes are found. Along the peninsulas, though, sit large million dollar homes. More luxury homes are found in Millbrook, although this area was originally built in the 30s. Putnam Park is another affordable area, but there are mainly condos here. Affordable single-family homes can be found in Putnam Hill, though. Condos are generally more readily available throughout the city over single-family homes. With so many home options, Greenwich is often considered one of the best suburbs to live in this part of the country.
There is no denying that Greenwich and Connecticut, in general, is a very wealthy part of the country. In fact, the U.S. Census Bureau indicated about 1/5 of the households in this area are considered high income. However, don’t let this discourage you from considering a move here. The stereotypes of rich, snobby people simply don’t apply to Greenwich. The people here are incredibly friendly and nice, especially to newcomers. Money does talk, though, and competition is fierce when it comes to private schools. However, the public schools in this area are excellent, so private school really isn’t needed. You do get some great perks from living in a high income area, such as upscale shopping options. You’ll find the more common chain stores, too. However, it is nice to not have to travel to a larger city to have a great shopping experience. Dining is amazing here, as well. There is a nice range of restaurants, from pizza parlors to Chinese carry outs to fine dining. So, while the cost of living here is a bit higher than other areas in the country, Greenwich, CT, still offer friendly neighbors, safe neighborhoods and superb schools, making it a great place to call home.
