Before officially becoming a state, Indiana was part of the Northwest Territory and later became the Indiana Territory. In 1816, Indiana was annexed into the United States. Indiana was a popular place for European immigrants, primarily from Germany, Ireland, and England, to settle. Indiana was a key part of the American Civil War, and so many people volunteered to be part of the war that thousands had to be turned down. After the Civil War, Indiana continued to be an agriculturally focused state, but new industries such as food processing and farm machinery began to grow. The 1950s and 1960s showed a period of growth for the state, and cities grew substantially.
