Iowa became a state in 1846, although American settlers moved to Iowa in 1833. The early American settlers in Iowa primarily came from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Indiana. During the American Civil War, Iowa was part of the Union. No battles were fought in this state, but Iowa was an important part of the war. They sent 75,000 volunteers to war, proportionately more than any other state. After the Civil War ended, the population of Iowa rapidly grew and the state became a major agricultural center. Although agriculture was the biggest contributor to Iowa's economy for many years, the state now has a mostly urban population and the economy is diverse.
