The bluegrass that grows in the state's fertile pastures provides a nickname for the state as well as a proper title for the Bluegrass Region, which is where Lexington can be found. Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky, behind Louisville. Both cities are located in the northern half of the state, only about 75 miles apart, and are the host cities of two top-tier colleges, the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. Louisville is also the home of Churchill Downs Racetrack where the Kentucky Derby is run annually. In the southern region you can visit Daniel Boone National Forest, the only forest that's completely contained within Kentucky's borders. The largest city in southern Kentucky is Bowling Green, home to Western Kentucky University and one of the fastest growing urban areas in the state. Northeast of Bowling Green is Mammoth Cave National Park where the world's longest cave system can be found.

Kentucky is culturally rich and provides plenty of recreational options. As the supplier of nearly all of the world's bourbon, you can visit distilleries from Lawrenceburg to Louisville. The naturally growing bluegrass is both lovely to look at and a staple food for horses, which is part of the reason the state is famous for breeding Thoroughbreds. Every year people flock to Hodgenville, KY, the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, for the annual Lincoln Days Celebration. While considered a Southern State, Kentucky displays an interesting mixture of Midwestern, Southern and Appalachian culture.
