Lancaster is in Dallas County, Texas, and is considered a suburban community. It is only about 15 miles south of Dallas. The original town was surveyed and staked off in 1852. It had a unique layout in which the town square had streets entering each side from the center instead of from the corners. Even though parts of the town square burned down in 1877, 1889, and in 1918, each time it was promptly built back up. It was finally incorporated in 1886 with its first newspaper starting up one year later. Population only ranged between 1000 and 1200 residents from 1900 to 1940. It continued to increase slowly until Cedar Valley College was opened in 1977, resulting in greater development.
