“Golf cart living” in The Villages
Fairways wind past rows of homes in the Village of Palo Alto, a golf course neighborhood located on the north side of The Villages, the country’s largest 55-plus community. Nearly every front yard in Palo Alto is shaded by mature magnolias, oaks or palm trees. And almost every garage has at least one golf cart parked in it. “What makes The Villages unique is the golf cart living,” says villager Kim Aschman, the broker and owner of Broker Associates Realty. “My parents are at the age where they no longer drive a car, but they can still get to the grocery store, the bank, restaurants and doctor’s appointments without being dependent. Honestly, golf carts get better parking spots here anyway.” Palo Alto is 2 miles—an easy golf cart ride—from shopping, dining, recreation and live entertainment.

Restaurants and live entertainment at Spanish Springs Town Square
Spanish Springs Town Square is a shopping, dining and entertainment hub 2 miles from the neighborhood. It pays homage to Florida’s Spanish influences, with a sprawling plaza and Spanish Revival architecture like grand arches, stucco buildings and terracotta barrel roofs. The late Villages’ founder, Harold Schwartz, is honored with a statue of his likeness in the heart of the square. The square is also the site for nightly live entertainment, and those dining on the patios of surrounding restaurants and bars can enjoy the music, too. Under Amerikanos Grille’s awning, Greek classics are served with an American spin. This family-owned and -operated restaurant has been a favorite in The Villages since opening in 2016. McCall’s Tavern is a casual eatery attached to the bowling alley Spanish Springs Lanes. The menu features Southern staples and bar bites. Smaller shopping areas with banks, pharmacies and doctors' offices surround Spanish Springs Town Square. Grocery stores like Publix and big-box stores are also nearby, right off U.S. 441.

Designer Homes and Courtyard Villas make up the village's housing
The Village of Palo Alto features models from The Villages’ Designer Homes and Courtyard Villa series and were built between 1996 and 2000. Prices range from $300,000 to $500,000, with Designer Homes being on the higher end. Designer Homes typically have more bedrooms and sit on larger lots while Courtyard Villas, built around a central courtyard, offer smaller floorplans on smaller lots. Many homes here already have their bond paid, saving buyers money. All homeowners pay a monthly amenity fee that provides access to all recreation centers, country clubs, golf courses and more across The Villages. However, residents are responsible for their own landscaping.

The Palo Alto Club of the Villages organizes activities
Many villages have social committees: “They’ll reach out to new people in the neighborhood and welcome them. It’s kind of informal; sometimes they’ll have a little driveway party or drop off a welcome package,” says villager Cheryl Parisi-Ciolfi, a Realtor with RE/MAX Foxfire. Palo Alto's social committee, The Palo Alto Club of the Villages, organizes fun activities with neighbors such as road trips, monthly dinners and luaus. The Tierra Del Sol Country Club, located adjacent to the village, is one of the club’s gathering spaces and is within walking distance. The country club's restaurant hosts afternoon live music performances from Wednesday to Saturday. Tierra Del Sol Championship Golf Course offers 18 holes and is considered one of the most challenging in The Villages. Across the street, the De La Vista Executive Course has nine holes and a practice putting facility. For pickleball courts and swimming pools, El Santiago Recreation Center and La Hacienda Recreation Center are 2 miles away.
