A small-town atmosphere in a city complex is how Sterling’s Best Places to Live describes Martinsburg, West Virginia. Its notable downtown district boasts historical houses, and attractive suburbs are full of single-family homes and condos; older houses are generally just as well kept as new construction. History buffs enjoy living near buildings where Virginia history was made and is being preserved. This little gem of a city is 6.67 square miles, which makes driving around town convenient for work or school in the area.

Martinsburg has a population of 17,227, according to the 2010 United States Census. This adds to its charm. It’s not so big that it's hard to get to know and not so small that it doesn’t meet everyone’s needs. The public school student-teacher ratio of 15.4 is in line with the national average. There are three technical colleges where education continues after high school as well as the University of Charleston-Martinsburg. Martinsburg has a mall anchored by major retailers, and there are five smaller shopping centers and many places to support local specialty stores and gift shops. Martinsburg even has the nation’s oldest farmer’s market. Residents have enjoyed shopping there since 1778. Annual events, including the Apple Harvest Festival, Chili Cookoff and Chocolate Fest and Book Faire, bring the community and visitors out for fun times together. There are plenty of free samples and a chance to tour a major candy factory at the Chocolate Fest.

Even Hollywood loves Martinsburg. It is the setting for an episode of the television show "The X Files," the reality show "Gypsy Sisters" on TLC, and the movie "Sweet Dreams" about country singer Patsy Cline. Martinsburg has four distinct seasons with gorgeous fall foliage; January temperatures average 31 degrees, and July averages a temperature of 75 degrees. Located 92 miles south of Washington, DC, it is convenient to travel to the nation’s capital from Martinsburg by car. Residents also enjoy day trips to cities like Richmond and Baltimore. AMTRAK and the Maryland Area Rapid Transit Company (MARC) have regularly scheduled train service to and from the city. There is also easy access to two medical centers. The town is a hub for federal government employment, jobs with major private companies and a wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard. The size, culture and work opportunities bring and keep young people starting their careers to Martinsburg. Families that want to raise children in a beautiful environment along the Allegheny Mountains also love to call it home. Search our listings to find your next home in this quaint town.
