Historic housing and ample green space in North Minneapolis
The Victory Neighborhood Association hosts monthly community meetings at Corner Coffee, a local cafe where most residents start their mornings anyway. Over breakfast sandwiches and craft lattes, community members plan shared garage sales, holiday celebrations and neighborhood cleanups, all while their kids form lifelong friendships in the coffee shop’s play area. Victory is a quintessentially suburban North Minneapolis neighborhood, but its housing has the charm of a historic neighborhood and its location along the Victory Memorial Parkway attracts the active and outdoorsy. “Minneapolis did a nice job of putting parkways around Victory,” says local Realtor Joel Friday of the expansive green space surrounding the neighborhood on two sides. “It’s accentuated by great access to the trail system and the Mississippi.”

Vintage homes on tree-lined streets
“Most of that neighborhood is single-family housing,” Friday says. “It’s got a flair to it. There are some nice ‘30s and ‘40s vintage homes.” Most homes in the neighborhood are early- to mid-20th-century bungalows with a stunning array of architectural details — steeply pitched roofs, exterior stonework and brightly painted trim adding charm and screened-in porches providing protected outdoor space. Lawns are small enough to require minimal maintenance but big enough to make use of the space, and tall trees generally shade front yards and sidewalks. Victory’s market moves quickly, with homes selling after an average of 21 days on the market, half the national average of 42. “Victory is fairly inexpensive relative to the rest of Minneapolis,” Friday says. “Prices are in the upper $200,000s on average and have been for the last three or four years.” For $200,000 to $350,000, buyers can generally find a comfortably sized, well-maintained single-family home.

Victory Memorial Parkway leads to the Mississippi
Ample green space benefits the active lifestyles of those who live in Victory. Runners and cyclists take advantage of Victory Memorial Parkway, a linear green space surrounding the neighborhood and containing a World War I memorial. “There is a monument for every fallen soldier from Hennepin County that died in the war,” says local Realtor Stephanie Gruver. Its trails lead to the Mississippi and are part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, a 51-mile route that loops the city. Located off the parkway, Victory Park has athletic facilities like a tennis court and basketball courts in addition to playgrounds and picnic areas. Pups run free at the Victory Prairie Off-Leash Dog Park, a sanctuary for dogs and humans alike to socialize and enjoy some fresh air. In 2017, the Victory Neighborhood Association opened Ryan Lake Park, which has trails, a fishing pier and the opportunity to launch kayaks and canoes from the shore.

A locally loved comic store and a neighborhood cafe
Since its opening in 1987, Hot Comics and Collectibles has garnered a cult following and created a community for comic fans from across the Twin Cities. Today, it’s perhaps Victory’s best-known local business, but residents likely make more day-to-day use of Corner Coffee, the neighborhood spot to grab a latte and catch up with friends. Its cozy environment is supplemented by a play zone, letting kids crawl around while parents mingle or catch up on work. Known for its inflatable polar bear greeting patrons at the door, Dancing Bear Chocolate is equally cherished by the neighborhood. This shop sells all sorts of sweet treats, from cakes and pies to handcrafted chocolate bars and homemade gelato. For groceries, most shop at the Hy-Vee two miles away.
