Montgomery is both the capital of the state of Alabama and its second largest city. Montgomery has been named the ‘Happiest City in Alabama’, a ‘Top City for Job Growth’, and an ‘All American City’. Residential homes within the city are both classic and modern in nature, ranging from smaller, subtle, cottage-style homes to southern mansions with wraparound porches and no expenses spared. While split-level homes with at least two stories prevail, one-story ranches are also available.

The southern bank of the Alabama River marks the downtown district of Montgomery, which is full of prominent and stately buildings like the Alabama State Capitol. The Riverfront park area and Old Alabama Town are two nearby developments which showcase historic structures as well as plenty of new buildings, such as an amphitheater and a stadium, and significant residential and commercial growth. The Bell Building and Wright Brothers Park are two downtown areas with readily available loft apartments and affluent homes. The Garden District and the Cloverdale Historic District, on the other hand, are on the National Register of Historic Places and represent the late Victorian and Gothic architectural influences on the city. The fastest growing area in Montgomery is its east side. Two major retail districts, Eastdale Mall and the Shoppes at Eastchase, are located there, as is the expansive Dalraida neighborhood.

Agriculture and distribution, Montgomery’s former two employing sectors, have given way to a more diversified economy of manufacturing, healthcare, business, retail, and government. But the city remains a stronghold of both farming – cotton, peanuts, and soybeans, primarily – and production and distribution of both lumber and metal. The largest employers in Montgomery are the Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, the State of Alabama, Montgomery Public Schools, Baptist Health, Alfa Insurance, and Regions. The city is an epicenter for healthcare and medical education, being home to dozens of hospitals and clinics as well as two medical school campuses.
