Mount Pleasant, SC, has been listed in the top 100 places to live in the country by Money magazine. This isn’t really surprising because many of the homes in this city are situated in family-friendly, diverse neighborhoods with stunning views of the marsh and river. Adding to this is the affordable median home price, which sits around $350,000, and the fact that it was ranked the ninth-fastest-growing city in the country in the 2013 U.S. Census.

Access to the city is made possible by the spectacular Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which was built in 2005 and is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the United States. Due to its location across the river from Charleston, the homes in this area used to be reserved only for the most prestigious Charleston residents, who typically used them as summer homes. This is still apparent in the Old Village area, where many original homes from the 1800s are found. Most popular is the Boone Hall Plantation, which features the breathtaking Avenue of Oaks. This plantation was also the setting for the 2004 blockbuster movie The Notebook. If you are curious about how old the homes in this area are, you’ll be pleased to know that the oldest one is the Hibben House, which was built by Jacob Motte in 1755. This rich, historic background draws people to the city.

Even though Mount Pleasant is close to larger cities, it’s isolated enough to avoid the noise and crime. In fact, crime rates are 68 percent lower than the average rate in the state, and 56 percent lower than the average rate in the country. This means that locals and visitors feel comfortable and safe when touring all the sites around town. Its location on the Cooper River ensures that much of the focus is on the area around the pier, where plenty of friendly locals and professional fishermen are found. Numerous seafood restaurants serve fresh catches daily as part of their authentic Southern menus, and fishing and boating are favorite pastimes for locals and tourists. Of course, the river isn’t the only local attraction that draws families to the area. Other popular spots in the city include Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, the Mount Pleasant Towne Center and Shem Creek. Even though it’s population of around 60,000 makes Mount Pleasant, SC, the fifth-largest city in the state, it still manages to keep a residential feeling and the small-town Southern charm that so many are seeking.
