West Rock
State park includes a historical natural attraction, trails and great views
West Rock Ridge State Park is the site of Judges Cave, three overlapping boulders that sheltered two fugitive 17th-century judges eluding the British government. Today, it’s still a great destination for a quick getaway, albeit under different circumstances. The park covers more than 200 acres of forest threaded with nature trails on which visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding landscape amid an elevation that reaches 700 feet. The South Overlook is a popular sightseeing destination, especially for dog owners, and provides access to the trails. There’s also a playground there on the banks of the West River. “West Rock is a very nice park, and it’s a nice feature of the neighborhood with historical significance, both for the state and the country,” says Borowski. Two unique public schools and a state university are in the neighborhood
Students can attend kindergarten through 12th grade and even attend college without leaving the neighborhood. Brennan-Rogers Magnet School is a K-8 institution that offers a curriculum focused on media and communications. Common Ground High School, Urban Farm and Environmental Education Center is a charter school with a mission to “prepare students for college success and environmental leadership.” C-rated schools by Niche, both get an "A" for diversity. Southern Connecticut State University is a public institution that offers more than 100 graduate degree programs and a variety of study-abroad programs.Housing comprises an attractively priced mixture of homes
The neighborhood’s housing is a mix of single-family homes and multi-family dwellings. Multi-level stick Victorians and Colonial Revival-style homes stand out among the most established homes, while cozy ranch-style, shotgun-style and farmhouse-style homes also can be found. Vinyl or clapboard-sided split levels highlight the neighborhood’s more contemporary housing, which also includes a collection of condominiums and townhouses. The mixture of housing is typical of New Haven. "Each neighborhood has pockets, so everyone is going to find the property they can afford and are happy with," says Borowski, who adds that "prices are lower than in other parts of the city." Prices typically range from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$300,000s. While West Rock does not offer quite the architectural diversity of neighboring Amity, its average home price is roughly $60,000 less at $225,000.Cat cafe highlights an eclectic mix of nearby eateries
An array of dining options are concentrated just south of the neighborhood along the State Route 63 corridor. Bella's Café is an award-winning Italian eatery that has been featured by Connecticut Magazine, Trip Advisor and the New York Times. Next door, you can grab a cup of coffee surrounded by felines at Mew Haven Cat Café. The first business of its kind in the state, the café also serves as a pet adoption agency. Additional featured stops along the corridor include the highly rated Camacho Garage, which serves up Mexican street food with a contemporary twist, Westville Diner, known for its creatively flavored shakes, and Rawa Mediterranean Fusion Restaurant. The corridor leads directly west to a concentration of retail stores, including a full-service Stop & Shop that anchors a shopping center in Amity.Major state route nearby; downtown is just 3 miles away
The retail stores are located along State Route 15 just minutes from the neighborhood. SR 15, also known as Wilbur Cross Parkway, provides quick and easy access to travel throughout the region. Bus stops can be found throughout the neighborhood, providing convenient public transportation for work commutes or travel within the city, including to downtown New Haven only 3 miles away. The downtown area is anchored by the campus of Yale University and includes cultural attractions such as the New Haven Museum and the Connecticut Children’s Museum.
