Located in the Southeast of the U.S. and bordering the Atlantic Ocean, North Carolina covers a spectrum of elevations from sea level coastal areas to the top of Mount Mitchell. North Carolina is experiencing a significant amount of growth, and there are a number of new communities popping up across the state. The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Area is experiencing some of the rapidest development with 300 new communities in the works. Charlotte, Fayetteville and Fort Bragg are following with additional growth.
Charlotte is the state's most populated city, and is the second biggest city in the Southeast. The city offers a rich selection of history and art museums and is home to a new aquarium that highlights a range of sea life. The city also hosts a number of festivals including the Carolina Renaissance Festival. The Carolina Panthers football team and Charlotte Hornets basketball team are both located in the city. Raleigh, the state's capital, due to its part in the recognized 'Research Triangle,' which includes North Carolina State University, Duke University (in Durham) and The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (in Chapel Hill). The three universities and their three cities provide a rich artistic and educational culture in the larger Metropolitan area.
The state has seen significant economic growth through an influx of businesses in a variety of industries. Much of this growth has occurred in the capital and its larger metropolitan area, as the universities have provided the area with a number of capable applicants. There has been a substantial amount of growth in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) industry, and it is one of the most successful tech industries in the country. Additionally, Charlotte has established its self as an important financial industry player, and Bank of America has its headquarters in the major city. Charlotte is home to nine Fortune 500 companies, which significantly contribute to the overall economy of the state. North Carolina has experienced a substantial amount of growth and provides a substantial amount of opportunity.
