Nestled midway between Sarasota and Fort Meyers, Florida, lies the city of Port Charlotte. Homes here are a stone’s throw away from the golf course, landscaped with palm trees and luscious grass, and many are surprisingly affordable. Neighborhoods are well kept and show that people have saved their money and are enjoying the good life here. While Port Charlotte has modest, low-rise homes, you can find elegant waterfront houses for sale as well.

Although the city has a large number of retirees, Port Charlotte’s economy has seen job growth of just under 4 percent. Since Florida has no income tax, those who are still working have an added perk. The population has grown steadily over the past few decades, but the city still maintains a small-town feel. Residents enjoy the perks of being near the coast but are shielded by neighboring towns from much of the tourist bombardment. This means that you’ll have more access to water activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving in an environment that is relatively unhampered by tourists. The visitors that sneak in under the radar share the enjoyment of the city’s spas, game centers, and the occasional fishing charter. Residents and tourists can enjoy kayaking and canoeing adventures as well as boat tours.

Port Charlotte was granted the distinction of being one of Forbes’ 25 Best Places to Retire in 2015. This city has also been awarded similar honors by CNNMoney.com and U.S. News & World Report. This is due in large part to the value available for the dollar spent on homes here. When your friends and family come to visit, you can take them to Ollie’s Pond Park for a nice nature stroll. The park is full of vibrant and active wildlife, and if you’re lucky, you may see an alligator or two. If you prefer, you can pull up a chair, take in the fresh air and just observe nature taking its course in this birdwatcher’s paradise. If you’d rather swim than sit, you can take a dip with the dolphins after work. Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park also offers excellent opportunities for nature enthusiasts. For those who prefer a golf birdie to a live one, there are plenty of places to practice your swing in Port Charlotte. If you are looking for a nice, quiet place to settle down, Port Charlotte, Florida, deserves a look.
