Port St. Lucie is a rapidly growing city of 171,000-plus located on the east coast of Florida roughly halfway between Orlando and Miami. The area features everything from detached single-family homes to condominiums and attached row houses. Founded in the early 1960s on the banks of the St. Lucie River, Port St. Lucie has a high percentage of homes built between 1970 and 1999 as well as a nearly equal number of newer homes built during or after the year 2000.

Since 2000, the population of Port St. Lucie has increased by an astonishing 93 percent. Despite this rapid influx of people, the city’s prices for single-family homes and condominiums remain well below average for the state of Florida as a whole. Area residents are slightly younger than the typical population for a Florida city and also have an above-average household income. Port St. Lucie boasts the lowest crime rate for any city in the state with at least 100,000 residents. It has 22 distinct neighborhoods, and ranks ninth on Florida’s list of largest cities. The total population for the metropolitan area is almost 440,000. Popular residential areas of the city include City Center, Carlton, River Park, Eden and White City.

The mixed local economy features a variety of white- and blue-collar job opportunities, with many people employed in fields such as sales, management and administrative support. Nearby schools include Indian River State College and the Florida Institute of Technology. Port St. Lucie is home to the winter training facilities of the New York Mets as well as one of the Mets’ minor league baseball teams. The city also hosts PGA Village, a 54-hole Professional Golf Association facility that’s open to the public and ranks as one of the nation’s 75 best golf resorts. In addition, the city is home to the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, a 20-acre nature sanctuary that features a lake, lush gardens and a range of public programs and concerts. Parks and pavilions are situated throughout the area and provide plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities. Several local neighborhoods have navigable waterways perfectly suited for kayaking, canoeing or even boating. What’s more, residents can take advantage of the Civic Center, a 100,000-square-foot, multi-use downtown complex that houses an art gallery and fitness center and hosts events that appeal to all segments of the public. Port St. Lucie provides an enticing blend of fun, diversity and safety for new and existing homeowners.
