South Portsmouth
A historic legacy of homes and residents
Steeped in history, a portion of the neighborhood was the United States’ first federally funded wartime community built for Black workers. Consisting of over 200 houses near Portsmouth Boulevard and Deep Creek Boulevard, The Truxtun Historic District was developed between 1918 and 1920 to provide housing and transportation for workers at the shipyard. Several homes on Hobson, Dewy and Manly Streets date back to the early 20th century.New communities join established neighborhoods
Because of its size, South Portsmouth has a variety of homes, from those dating back to the early 20th century to new constructions popping up in the last 10 years. “There’s a lot of opportunity in Portsmouth for those who want to buy homes under the average value of Hampton Roads, which is about $400,000. So, you can still buy a lot of homes in Portsmouth for around $200,000,” Garrett says. Ranch styles from the 1940s on the southwest side of the neighborhood can cost between $235,000 and $300,000. Two-story early 20th-century homes and renovated ranch styles on the northeast side of the neighborhood may be priced between $150,000 and $250,000. “A lot of the housing in Portsmouth, like its sister city, Norfolk, is older and needs to be maintained or updated. You have to keep that in mind when you buy a home,” Garrett says. The New Port at Victory subdivision, right next to Victory Elementary School, has single-family homes and attached townhouses, as well as access to the community clubhouse, playground, fitness center and pool. Contemporary traditional-style homes built in 2015 with vinyl siding cost around $315,000. Townhouse styles here vary from vinyl, brick and shingle-sided exteriors with Craftsman influences. They can cost about $250,000 and typically have three bedrooms.Golf, swim and play in South Portsmouth
