The Hebard and Thurberg Lumber Company leased the peninsula in 1877 and began harvesting its old growth forests, and carrying the logs to the nearby sawmills at Pequaming. Today the thickly wooded second-growth forests are managed for production of pulpwood, and the shoreline is dotted with fine private homes and cottages, and vacant land parcels. The northern end of the Peninsula has Copper Country State Forest lands and the County of Baraga has a beautiful park located at the rugged, rocky tip.
