If you have to walk through an area to get to a bedroom, can the walk-through area be legally classified as a bedroom?

I previewed a "3BR/2BA" house for a client. I passed through an area the former owners evidently used as an office/den to get through the other bedroom. They listed this walk-through area as the 3rd bedroom. I seem to recall from a CE class that if you had to walk through it to access another area, it couldn't be considered a bedroom.
