Active neighborhood association near Methodist Hospital
The neighborhood of Browndale sits a mile from Methodist Hospital, one of the top medical facilities in the Twin Cities. As such, many healthcare workers move to Browndale for its employment opportunities, but also because of the area's highly-rated schools. Comprised of a variety of housing styles, Browndale offers everything from quaint Cape Cods to the larger prairie-influenced builds. Browndale also has an active neighborhood association, which suits the area. “We have a strong community vibe, and residents are in touch with each other,” says Steve Gerten, president of the Browndale Neighborhood Association. Catering to those with young families who’d like to make friends with their neighbors, she adds, “We will seriously crowdsource babysitting to enjoy a wine and cheese night together and be out supporting local businesses.”
The neighborhood is situated in the southern part of St. Louis Park, with Edina to the south and Minneapolis to the east.
Prairie-style houses with detatched garages are a popular style within the Browndale community.

Competitive market with charming single-family homes
Browndale has single-family homes in many architectural styles, including Cape Cod, Tudor Revival, new traditional, contemporary and prairie-style homes. Most of the area's homes were built pre-1950, and many have been updated and maintained to preserve their condition. “People will buy a $600,000 house that needs a ton of work, so they’ll tear that down and put up another $700,000 house,” Gerten says. “So, you’ve got price points in the $1.5 million range all of a sudden.” He explains that the market is competitive in Browndale: “It’s an upper-echelon neighborhood rather than a first-time homebuyer area, and inventory is always low because people tend to want to stay,” Gerten says. “A lot of units are selling off-market, so if you know of somebody that’s hinted at selling, they’ve got people knocking down their door.” Prices here start around $300,000 for a two-bedroom cottage and get as high as $1 million for a five-bedroom new build.
Minimal traditional, craftsman and prairie-style homes are a few housing types that make up the Browndale community.

Food truck Fridays at Browndale Park
“One of the biggest draws is the Browndale Park itself,” Gerten says. “Our board is very active in creating experiences for the residents that live in the neighborhood, or even nearby, and proximity to the park is paramount.” At Browndale Park, the neighborhood association hosts Food Truck Fridays during the spring, summer and fall. “People bring their blankets, coolers, you name it, and the kids come down to play while the adults get to catch up,” Gerten says. “Kids get to unwind, and it’s a pleasant way to kick off your weekend.” For those seeking water access, proximity to Minneapolis’ lakes is another draw to the neighborhood. “Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles and Bde Maka Ska are three of the city’s most popular recreational lakes, and they’re all directly adjacent,” Metchnek says. “If you’re someone who likes to be close to nature, you couldn’t ask for much more.”

Bars, bakeries and retail shopping
Longtime local hangout Bunny’s Bar & Grill is where most residents hang out on weekends to grab a drink or catch the game. For a more elevated experience, the nearby Copperwing Distillery and The Dampfwerk Distillery have cocktail bars with house-distilled spirits. Neighborhood bakeries Heather’s Pies and Hold The Wheat sell sweet treats for those with and without gluten intolerances, and a nearby McDonald’s and Chipotle make picking up a weeknight dinner easy. For groceries, there’s a Fresh Thyme Market less than a mile away, and a nearby Target, Micro Center and Half Price Books offer retail shopping.
Although a premier sports bar, Bunny's serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week.
If you're looking for gluten-free options, come to Hold The Wheat.

Proximity to downtown and Methodist Hospital
“This is an inner ring suburb, so one of the first stops outside Minneapolis,” says Realtor Gary Metchnek of Edina Realty. “You’ve got really short commutes if you need to go downtown for work or entertainment.” Getting downtown takes less than 15 minutes when driving and about 45 minutes with the Metro Transit bus. Browndale is also a popular spot for those who work at Methodist Hospital, which is about a mile away. “Methodist Hospital is one of the big hospitals in the Twin Cities area,” says Realtor Joel Friday, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 20 years. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is about 25 minutes away.
Fostering community in St. Louis Park
Each June, St. Louis Park kicks off summer with the St. Louis Park Parktacular, a four-day celebration with a pool party, concert in Wolfe Park and parade. In September, the city comes together for the SLP Art Fair, where over 70 local artists display and sell their work.
