Peace Valley Charter School may be your best choice if you're seeking an alternative to the traditional curriculum offered at most public schools. Peace Valley opened in the fall of 2018 and provides a Waldorf-based education to kindergarten through eighth grade students in Boise's Vista neighborhood. Peace Valley goes beyond rote memorization to develop students’ intellectual, artistic and practical capabilities. Students don’t change teachers every year at Peace Valley. Instead, they keep the same teacher from first through eighth grade, developing long-term, positive relationships with their instructors and classmates. At every grade level, instructors incorporate storytelling into their teaching to awaken children’s imaginations and build vocabulary and literacy skills. They also integrate this technique into math, science, geography and social studies. Conservation is part of the Peace Valley curriculum. This includes caring for the school’s native garden, which fosters a respect and responsibility toward nature. Music instruction begins early and continues as students master the pentatonic flute, recorder and ukulele. Seasonal festivals are a highlight for kids and their parents. Myths, foods and cultural activities help students learn about the world around them. Highlights include the Autumn Festival of Courage, the Winter Spiral and the May Day celebration. Peace Valley also offers an after-school program that maintains the rhythms and rituals established in the classroom. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in the school's operation through volunteering. Opportunities include the annual spring gala and silent auction, where dinner, music and dancing help fundraise for the school.
