Lorenzo de Zavala Elementary School opened in 1878 as Third Ward School and went through several names and locations before moving to San Luis Street and being renamed in 1951 for a key figure in Texas’ quest for independence.
The elementary school in the San Antonio Independent School District serves pre-K through fifth grades. Student enrollment for the 2021 school year was roughly 480. The school strives for a high student-to-teacher ratio with a highly experienced staff.
Although test scores are below the state’s student average, De Zavala Elementary School offers Head Start, bilingual education, arts, and gifted and talented programs. The school also provides support activities and academic events throughout the year. Teacher Angelica Nino was named a 2018 finalist for the Presidential Award in Math and Science Teaching.
Like other schools in the SAISD system, De Zavala Elementary School is dedicated to reaching an underserved student population. The school honors its long history by maintaining standing traditions and holding special events such as a staff basketball game, monthly positive behavioral interventions and flag football games.
