North and South Carolina resulted, and South Carolina continued developing through agriculture and commodities such as tobacco, tar and lumber. The state later seceded from the Union, but rejoined during Reconstruction after the Civil War. Throughout South Carolina's history, however, it has remained a beautiful and distinctive place that many are proud to call home.
