Nestled on the banks of the Hudson River in central New York is the historical and charming city of Troy. It is part of New York’s Capital District, as the state capital of Albany is just across the river. Founded in the late 1700’s, the city has Dutch and Native American roots and is steeped in history. Much of the downtown architecture is Victorian, with beautiful woodwork, Tiffany stained glass windows, stone foundations and intricate iron work. Housing in Troy is extremely affordable, which attracts a diverse population of people including urbanites, students and small business owners.

Troy is a city, but one that feels more like a small town. It combines the convenience and accessibility of urban living with a friendly tight-knit community, despite its population of 50,000. Each neighborhood has its own neighborhood association that is made up of volunteers who work hard to beautify their city and showcase what it has to offer. Residents of Troy can walk down their street and find restaurants, antique stores, wine bars and yoga studios, and can feel safe while doing so. Troy’s proximity to Albany means that commutes are short. Residents of Troy enjoy many events throughout the year, including parades, concerts, and BBQ competitions. The newly revitalized riverfront is a beautiful and popular outdoor destination and a farmer’s market can be found downtown every Saturday.

Troy is also home to the 265 acre campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which ranks among the 50 best universities in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. Russell Sage College and Hudson Valley Community College also call Troy their home. The city has thriving businesses, well-regarded hospitals, numerous churches, three synagogues and a mosque. Troy has been undergoing a sort of renaissance in recent years. Many of its residents are transplants. People have flocked to the city for the business opportunities and the lively arts scene. Students who come to Troy for an education fall in love and end up staying. Troy truly offers something for everyone. Those looking for a city with a slower pace and a real sense of community will be happy to call Troy their home. It truly is a hidden treasure.
